British cultural institutions have received more and more support from fossil fuel companies in recent years, leading to growing opposition, Hong Kong Wen Wei Po reported.
The Troy: myth and truth exhibition held by the British Museum in London was said to be sponsored by BP, which caused opposition from many environmental protection organizations. Hundreds of people once broke into the museum to occupy part of the exhibition hall, asking the museum to stop and BP Cooperation.
This demonstration was conducted by "BP or not BP?" Some members dressed as ancient Greek soldiers took a nearly 4m long Trojan horse model into the entrance hall of the museum on the night of July 7. Two members stayed in the museum all night to prevent the Trojan horse from being removed.
The group pointed out that more than 1500 supporters from environmental protection organizations such as "fight against extinction" also joined in the action on August 8. They occupied 11 exhibition rooms of the museum and left paper cranes in the museum with the words "choose sponsors who really care about our future". At the end of the action, the protesters tore up the paper with BP logo at the gate of the museum. Fischer, director of the British Museum, said that the museum is a public place where the public can discuss relevant issues, and the museum also respects the right of the public to express their opinions freely. He said that the museum provides millions of people with access to human culture and history, but without external support and sponsorship, people will not be able to use the museum services.
