Norway's "Doomsday Seed Bank" received 60000 seed samples from all over the world Friday, the Central News Agency reported. The world's largest crop vault hoards seeds to protect crops from global disasters.
According to the report, the seeds will be deposited in the deep mountains near the city of long IL, Spitsbergen island in swaba islands, Norway, about 1000 km from the North Pole.
Schmitz, executive director of the crop trust fund, which runs the seed bank, said that as climate change and the rate of biodiversity loss increase, there is a new urgency in the rescue of endangered crops
"The large-scale deposit of today's crop seeds reflects concerns about climate change and loss of biodiversity, which will have an impact on food production," he added. But more importantly, it shows that more and more attention has been paid to the role of conservation and crop diversity around the world, which is crucial for farmers to adapt to the changes in the planting environment. Now, the institutions and countries where seeds are deposited have expanded globally. ".
It is reported that institutions in Brazil, the United States, Germany, Morocco, Israel, Mongolia and other countries send common and wild crops of different varieties.
It is reported that the latest batch of seeds will raise the seed bank to about 1.05 million kinds. These seeds will be placed in three cellars of the seed bank, which is known as the "Noah's Ark" for food crops.
Seed banks are set up to protect biodiversity in the face of global climate change, war and other natural or man-made disasters. It can hold up to 4.5 million seeds.
The seed bank was opened in 2008 and is funded by Norway.
