The United Nations called on the international community to take urgent action to raise funds to help countries in the horn of Africa resist locust invasion and avoid serious locust disaster and humanitarian crisis.
At a briefing held at United Nations headquarters in New York on the same day, U.N. Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs said that Kenya had the most serious desert locust invasion in 70 years, while Somalia and Ethiopia were experiencing the most serious locust invasion in 25 years. In addition, desert locusts have invaded Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.
Lockock said the locust invasion would put about 19 million people at serious risk of food insecurity. He called on the countries concerned, the international community and donors to act immediately, "otherwise we are likely to face a disaster".
